Entry tags:alice, amber, cal is a giant dork, isabel, room 407, soap battle!

Room 407; Friday Evening.
Completely unaware of any interesting, bizarre, or potentially frightening things going on outside the dorms, Cal had settled in front of his typewriter on his desk, reached out his hands, interlocked, to crack his knuckles and then looked at the fresh piece of paper nestled in the device with determination. He figured he could stand to try that writing thing again, really, and was feeling inspired...

...unfortunately, his inspiration, it would seem, was rather misdirected. He had, perhaps erroneously, thought to put his growing collection of animal-shaped soaps flanking his Underwood.

And now they were in the midsts of a great battle across his keys. At first, it was the monkey and the koala joining forces against the butterfly, mammal and marsupial against...insect, he supposed, but then, with a declaration that Cal himself released in a voice he thought appropriate for a soap animal, the koala declared himself to betray the monkey and joined forces with butterfly, and the war that ensued was truly epic, complete with sound effects and, somehow, explosions.

And, yes, while the colorful battle raged on, Cal had completely forgotten about his open door.

By the time Amber had made it up to the fourth floor, down the hall, she was nearly out of breath and paused near an open doorway, leaning against it for a moment while she reached up to brush hair back from her brow.

It was only a moment's of slight awkwardness that she noticed who's room she had actually stopped by. "Cal..." she said his name before she thought to just move on to her own room. Which of course she didn't do. She just stood there, leaning against his doorframe.

With the butterfly poised up high and prepared to viciously dive-bomb the monkey, Cal was just about to let out the winged insect's battle cry when he caught the sound of his name, jumped slightly and just dropped the butterfly with his face already pooling with red. He wondered how convincing he could sound if he claimed that, really, he wasn't playing with little decorative soaps, it was all just a figment of whoever it was' imagination.

He turned his head toward the door, blinked, and subtly tried to push the monkey and the koala out of view. "Uhhh, hey, Amber."

...Why did she look like she had been running?

Why did it look like he had been playing with animal soaps? Amber was hardly in the right frame of mind to actually force that question out, and nine times out of ten he would deny that she'd seen such a thing. She knew she would if she were him. Then again, who knew. She was a dork.

"I just was pausin' here for a second." Yes, she knew her room was right there. "...just restin'."

Pausing...in front of his door. Which, really, he shouldn't have left open in the first place, but it wasn't like he was expecting to be caught up in an epic battle of soaps.

Although maybe, if he substituted soaps for countries, he might have something to write after all.

"...have you been running?" he asked.

Amber shook her head. "No. Went to town this afternoon," she frowned, "and have been tryin' to get back. I... there were things. I lost consciousness. Have you been inside all day?"

"Uh, yeah. Lost consciousness?"

Any concerns he had about decorative soaps quickly disappeared.

"God, Amber, you're okay, right?"

"For awhile? But when I came to, there were more of..." she shook her head. "Maybe I was just seein' things." But she knew she hadn't. They were there and they were real.

She paused. Felt slightly foolish.

"...were you playin' with your soap?"

"...You sure you're okay?" Cal asked. "Maybe you're still seeing things. Here..."

The chair scraped a little against the floor as he pushed it back to stand up, moving over toward her; he offered his arm to lightly guide her inside. "Come in, have a seat. Recover a bit."

Nodding mindlessly, she accepted his arm and let him lead her to sit down. "Maybe I am. It's weird. This feelin'," she mused out loud.

But damn if she wasn't still seeing things, because she couldn't help but notice his little soaps. "Huh."

Box of salt in hand, Isabel knocked on the door frame to the room.

"Curse your sudden and inevitable betra--" The tragic cry of monkey was cut off short by a knock on the door and Cal, shoulders stiffening, blinked a moment at the soaps in his hand and wondered if he should just pretend he hadn't heard it. Then again, if he just continued, he'd seem probably even stranger, so he cleared his throat, set the soaps down, and turned away from the desk, toward the door.

"...Yes?" he asked, his voice hitting a slightly higher octave thanks to his embarrassment.

Despite being tired and still a little disturbed by her run in with the ghost, Isabel had to smile at the soap battle.

"Who's winning?" she asked with a small smile.

"I...have no idea what you're talking about," Cal told her with an expression of utmost innocence, which he managed fairly well, if you ignored the redness in his face and the small, guilty pressing of the lips that followed.

His eyes did go to Isabel's hand after a moment, though, as if to make it very clear that even if he was playing with soap, she was carrying a box of salt, so could she really say anything?

Considering the number of times Isabel's been embarrassed by being caught singing or dancing in her room, she could relate to how he felt. "Right. You were just working."

"There's weirdness afoot," she said by way of explaining the salt. "Ghost or spirits of some sort."

Working. That was it. That certainly accounted for the blank page in his typewriter at the moment.

"...Really?" Cal asked. "Seriously?"

The attempt is all that mattered.

"Seriously," Isabel nodded. "I went down to JGoB for a brownie and had a run-in with one. It was like something suddenly sucked all the heat from your body. I saw more on my way back to the dorms. So I'd say something strange is going on."

Alice peered through the doorway, watching with no small measure of amusement.

Finally she said, "I do believe the monkey's in for it now."

Funny, the monkey was thinking the same thing. Cal, however, having the other two soaps in each hand with the monkey in the middle, suddenly halted his double-teamed advances and blinked at the typewriter battle field, and then slowly, with a slightly hanging jaw, turned his head toward the door.

You'd think he'd have learned after all the others.

"...uhhh..."

He was also running out of excuses. He gave Alice an extremely embarrassed smile, lifting his hand holding the koala and a few fingers in a sort-of wave. "Hey, Alice..." Very casual, even if he supposed it would be a bit silly worrying about the self-proclaimed insane girl thinking you were crazy.

"Good evening," she smiled, dropping him a quick curtsy. "What inspired this epic battle? Boundary disagreements? Is the line of succession in jeopardy? Or is this a tavern brawl as opposed to a military offensive?"

Really, there wasn't much the self-proclaimed insane girl did consider crazy.

The more Alice spoke, the redder Cal's face seemed to become. "Uhh, well..."

He was probably past the point of trying to get out of it in this case, so he shrugged, and said, "You know, I don't rightly know. They were just sitting there, getting along, and then all of a sudden, the butterfly just attacked. Clearly, the koala and the monkey wanted to defend themselves and then it all just went downhill from there."

"I see," Alice said, looking carefully at the three soap-participants. "I wouldn't have expected the butterfly to be the aggressor. Perhaps that's why he is: because no one expects it of him. One would think that the koala and monkey together could dispatch of him easily; without his wings, he'd be extremely vulnerable."

"...They'd have to get to his wings first," Cal pointed out, although somewhat hesitantly. The hesitation was born entirely from the fact that this was a conversation about a fake battle between fake pieces of artistically carved soaps.

"That should not provide a great difficulty," Alice said, musing over the idea. "If one was fighting a butterfly, one should concentrate all one's efforts on the wings. Have they no weapons? They have, at least, bare hands."

Alice had seemingly no compunction about discussing soap-related violence. It was conversation, and words led such an interesting dance.

"Well," Cal said after much longer of a moment of consideration than he probably should have afforded to the topic. "The monkey does." He held it up, displaying that the small orange primate did, indeed, have one hand bend up and available. "But not the koala." It proved true that the koala's hands seemed but mere lumps against his stomach, clutching to what was likely a eucalyptus branch, and therefor utterly ineffectual.
